Pennsylvania Merricks in the Civil War
Hiram L. and Joysa F. (Whitney) Merrick
My third great grandfather, Hiram L Merrick, was born May 2nd,1815 in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He died there on January 7th, 1894. His father is thought to be Moses Merrick, counted in Delmar on the 1820 Federal census.
Hiram married Joysa F Whitney on December 14, 1835, in Bradford, McKean County, Pennsylvania.
She was born May 18,1813 in Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York. She died April 10,1877 in Bradford, McKean County, Pennsylvania.
They are buried at North Bingham Cemetery, Potter County, Pennsylvania.
They had ten children. Three of their five sons served in the U.S. Civil War. One of the three was our ancestor, Joseph Sylvester Merrick. Only he returned from the war.

Lester Merrick
They had one son, Frank E. Merrick, born in 1866. Lester didn't serve in the U.S. Civil War. He died of a brain hemorrhage on February 24, 1909, at the age of 73 and is buried at North Bingham Cemetery in Potter County, Pennsylvania.
Velorus C Merrick
Velorus (Felorus) C Merrick was born on March 18, 1837, in Pennsylvania. He appears on the roster of volunteers on August 26, 1862, from Potter County, Pennsylvania. He served in the 149th Pennsylvania Infantry - Company G. He was twenty-five years old.
On October 16th, 1862, seven weeks after volunteering, he died in a Washington, D.C. hospital of typhoid fever. He's buried at the U.S. Soldiers' and Airmen's Home; a National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. He left behind a wife named Helen who filed in 1863 for a Federal 'Widow's pension'. We've no evidence they had children; no one claimed an 'Orphan's' pension.
Joseph Sylvester Merrick
Joseph Merrick appears on the roster of Pennsylvania's 136th Infantry Regiment. He joined on August 14th,1864 in Tioga County, Pa.; two years after his older brother died. He survived the war and in his later years drew a Federal 'Invalid's pension.' He was on the list of pensioner's in 1883. The reason for his disability was lung disease; his monthly check, $4.00.
He died of influenza complicated by bronchitis on April 5, 1924, in Canton, Pennsylvania, at the age of 83. He is buried at Beech Flats Cemetery in Bradford County, Pennsylvania.
Leonard Merrick
Leonard Merrick was born on April 11, 1846, in Bingham, Potter County, Pennsylvania. On March 30, 1864, he appeared on the roster of the 53rd Pennsylvania Infantry - Company D at Cowdersport, Pennsylvania. He was mustered in on April 4th, 1864, in Harrisburg, Pa.
He turned 18 years old a week after that. In another month, killed in battle on Willet's Point around Petersburg, Virginia. As for his burial, from Wikipedia;
He was never married. My third great grandpa Hiram L Merrick filed a claim for Federal Dependent's pension in 1890."At Petersburg...Union soldiers who were killed in battle were hastily buried near where the fighting took place, some in single shallow pits, others in mass graves. ...Most of these soldiers were not given a proper burial, save what their comrades could provide by saying a few words over them. "
Charles Adelbert Merrick
Charles Adelbert Merrick was born on October 28, 1847, in Pennsylvania. He married a girl named Mahala in 1880. She was born on December 11th, 1860 and died March 27th, 1931 in Bingham, Potter County, Pennsylvania. They had three children.
He joined the military after the war on the 22nd of January, 1870 and died of arteriosclerosis on April 25, 1920, in Bingham, Pennsylvania, at the age of 72. He is buried at North Bingham Cemetery in Potter County, Pennsylvania.
